Red lips—power, sexual, beauty, femininity are all things that come to mind when associating red lips. Men and women alike are obsessed over the powerful color of red. .

Does it bring an extra boost of confidence when wearing red—outfit, manicures, blush?

Throughout history ancient Egyptians painted their lips red with kohl. As long as there has been humanity, there has been vanity and makeup in some form or other—in Japan, geishas paint their faces white and their lips a deep red. Red lips are a universal symbol of beauty and never goes out of style. Some of you may assume that you can’t wear it, but boy are you wrong.

We are here to show you how.

Tip 1: Consider the rest of your face. The paler the color of your skin, the more extreme the result will be. Remember to go light on the eyes or else you will look like a mannequin or worst, a clown.

Tip 2: Consider the lighting. If you are going to be outdoors, choose a lighter or sheerer shade. In the evening, go for a bolder shade so your features stand out (remember the bolder the shade, the more pop).

Tip 3: If you have super dry flakey lips, do not wear bright lipstick—it will accentuate and make your lips look worse. You have to get your lips super smooth, with a little preparation. To get rid of dead skin and smooth that pucker, lightly brush your lips with a toothbrush, and remember to moisturize with Chapstick or lip balm.

Tip 4: Consider the color. Like I mentioned on tip number 1, consider skin color. If your complexion is pink, you would look better in a plum shade, while if your complexion is more yellow tone then you will be complimented with warmer reds that have a brown base.

Tip 5: Be precise whether you are using a lip liner or applying the lipstick straight from the tube. Lipstick should not be applied casually from the back of a cab. Precision is an art form. Remember when applying, start with your top lip and apply from the center out to the sides. Do the same with the bottom lip. Resist smacking your lips when done! If you made any mistakes, fix them with a q-tip and repeat with a second layer of lipstick.

One last tip is to always check your lips throughout time to time. Remember to carry a mirror in your purse, and check more often when eating or drinking.
